FAQ

LCL shipping, answered

What shippers ask us before their first consolidated shipment.
Ask us directly
or call +1 (646) 722-0968

What is LCL shipping?

+
LCL stands for less than container load: multiple shipments are consolidated into a single container. It is ideal for businesses that don't need to ship large quantities of goods. Cargo is received at a container freight station (CFS), consolidated with other shippers' freight and devanned at the destination CFS.

What is the difference between FCL vs LCL?

+
FCL stands for full container load, which means a single shipment fills an entire container. LCL means multiple smaller shipments are consolidated into a single container. As a rule, LCL suits cargo under about 15 CBM, while a 20 ft container (about 33 m³ of internal volume) is more economical above that.

What are LCL shipping rates?

+
LCL shipping rates vary depending on the size of the shipment, the distance it needs to travel and other factors. It is best to consult a freight forwarder to get accurate rates. Rates are quoted per cubic meter or per 1,000 kg, whichever is greater, with a 1 CBM minimum charge at most carriers, plus CFS handling at origin and destination.

What is ocean LCL?

+
Ocean LCL is LCL shipping that moves goods by sea. It is a cost-effective way to ship smaller quantities of goods. Interworld Freight consolidates weekly at each of 7 Chinese origin ports, and 20 Caribbean islands are on its LCL lanes.

How can I get an LCL shipping quote?

+
Contact our experts at Interworld Freight with information about your shipment: dimensions, weight, origin and destination. Include the commodity, number of packages, total volume in CBM and whether the cargo is hazardous, and an advisor replies with rate and next sailing.

Can you ship hazardous materials by LCL?

+
Yes. Our team of trained experts handles dangerous goods and chemicals in compliance with all safety regulations, and segregates incompatible goods within the container. Dangerous goods move under the IMDG Code with a Dangerous Goods Declaration and class labels, and the IMDG segregation rules decide which goods can share a container.

Do you offer insurance for LCL shipments?

+
Yes. Our comprehensive insurance services cover your cargo against loss, damage or theft in transit, and our experts help you choose the right coverage. Insurance is a separate policy based on the cargo value, because carrier liability is limited by law or convention to a small amount per package or per kilo.
