Heavy, long and oversized

Building materials shipping: containers, flat rack and breakbulk

Building materials break when the packing is an afterthought. Tile and slab need A-frames and edge protection, pipe and rebar need bundling and dunnage, and anything past 40 ft or 45 tonnes stops being a container problem and becomes a flat rack, open top or breakbulk booking. We survey the piece, choose the equipment, write the blocking and bracing plan, and consolidate truckloads in Miami so a job site receives one delivery instead of six.

Building materials logistics: frequently asked questions

How do you ship oversized building materials?

+
By flat rack or open top when the piece will not fit a standard container, and as breakbulk when it will not fit either. We agree the lashing and dunnage plan before the cargo reaches the port and book the crane and the trailer for the lift.

What is out-of-gauge cargo?

+
Cargo that exceeds the internal dimensions of a standard container, so it overhangs in height, width or length. It travels on flat racks or open tops, pays a surcharge based on the overhang and often needs road permits at both ends.

Can you handle heavy building materials in a container?

+
Yes, within the payload limit of the box and the road weight limit at each end, which is usually the real constraint. We declare the verified gross mass before loading and split the load across containers when the weight demands it. SOLAS requires the shipper to provide the verified gross mass before the container is loaded on the vessel, by weighing the packed container or by calculating the total.

Do you store building materials?

+
Yes. Ambient racking and yard space in Miami, with bonded and Foreign Trade Zone options so duties wait until the material leaves for the domestic market. In a bonded warehouse, goods can stay up to five years from importation before duty is paid or the goods are re-exported.

Which documents does a building materials export need?

+
Bill of lading, commercial invoice and packing list with the HS code, plus a certificate of origin where a trade agreement applies and fumigation for wood packaging under ISPM 15. The exporter also files Electronic Export Information (EEI) in AES when any Schedule B line exceeds $2,500.

How much does it cost to ship a container of building materials?

+
The rate follows the lane, the equipment and the weight, not the commodity: a 40 ft of tile to the Caribbean and a flat rack of steel to West Africa are different bookings entirely. Send the packing list with weights and dimensions and you get a firm number within one business day.

Do you offer 3PL for building materials?

+
Yes. Storage in Miami, order picking, truckload consolidation and the export leg run on one account, which is what a distributor buying from several mills actually needs instead of a warehouse in one place and a forwarder in another.

Can you export a full container of building materials?

+
Yes, 20 ft and 40 ft, and we consolidate several suppliers into one container when no single vendor fills it. Heavy dense cargo usually hits the weight limit before the cube, so the 20 ft is often the right box even when it looks small. A 20 ft holds about 33 m³ internally, a 40 ft about 67 m³ and a 40 ft high cube about 76 m³.

How do you protect building materials in transit?

+
Slabs travel on A-frames with edge protection, tile is palletized and banded, pipe and rebar are bundled and dunnaged, and the blocking and bracing plan is written before the container is stuffed. Damage on this cargo is almost always a loading decision, not a sea condition.
