How shipping from China to the Bahamas works

There is no direct China-to-Bahamas service in our network. Cargo leaves a Chinese port on a mainline transpacific vessel, reaches Miami, and crosses to the Bahamas on a second leg of 1 to 2 days.

Interworld Freight carries transit data for Freeport, Bimini, Marsh Harbour (Abaco), George Town (Exuma), Cat Island, Long Island, Andros and four Eleuthera ports. Nassau has no fixed Miami leg on file, so that leg is quoted per sailing. Freeport on Grand Bahama is itself a transshipment facility of regional significance, with the Freeport free trade zone alongside it.

The Miami connection is where the schedule risk sits: each port has a set arrival day (Freeport Tuesday to Friday, Bimini Thursday, Cat Island Monday), and a missed connection moves the cargo to the next arrival day. See Caribbean transshipment hubs.

How long it takes, leg by leg

What sets the range. The range comes from the Chinese port of loading, not from the island: in Interworld Freight's LCL tariff of July 21, 2026, Shanghai reaches Miami in 18 days, Qingdao and Shenzhen in 35 and Ningbo in 37, and the Miami to the Bahamas leg adds 1 or 2 days by island. The totals are port-to-port sailing days. They exclude the cargo cut-off at the origin warehouse, the wait in Miami for the next sailing and customs clearance on arrival.

Our consolidated service quotes 19 to 39 days from the Chinese port to the Bahamian ports on file. The origin port sets the range: Shanghai reaches Freeport in 19 days, Qingdao and Shenzhen in 36 days and Ningbo in 38 days.

  • Origin consolidation, 3 to 7 days. LCL only.
  • Chinese port to Miami. Shanghai 18 days, Qingdao 35, Shenzhen 35, Ningbo 37.
  • Miami to the Bahamas, 1 day to Freeport, Bimini, Marsh Harbour and George Town, 2 days to Cat Island, Long Island and Spanish Wells. Nassau is quoted per sailing.
  • Deconsolidation, 2 to 5 days. LCL only.
  • Customs clearance, 1 to 5 days.

Air freight into Lynden Pindling runs 3 to 7 days. See air freight to the Bahamas and the regional comparison in China to Caribbean transit times.

What it costs and what drives the number

The Bahamian charge structure has a feature worth planning around: the processing fee is capped, which makes it regressive.

Component Basis Notes
Ocean freight Per CBM (LCL) or per container (FCL) Routed through Miami
Origin and destination CFS Per shipment or per CBM LCL only
Terminal handling, both ends Flat n/a
Customs brokerage Per entry n/a
Import duty Own Bahamian tariff schedule by HS code The primary revenue mechanism; rates are meaningful
VAT 10% On customs value plus duty n/a
Processing fee 1% Minimum USD 10, maximum USD 750 Stops scaling at USD 75,000 of value
Environmental levies Specific categories Applies to vehicles, tyres, batteries and similar

That capped fee matters in the mode decision. On a USD 20,000 consignment the fee is USD 200, a full 1%. On a USD 200,000 container it is still USD 750, or 0.375%. Consolidating orders reduces the effective rate, which is one more reason the flat-charge arithmetic favours fewer, larger shipments.

The CIF tax base applies: duty and VAT are computed on goods plus insurance plus freight, so an inflated freight component in a supplier's CIF quote is taxed on top of being inflated. The full cost stack is in China to Caribbean shipping cost.

LCL, FCL or air: choosing for the Bahamas

Nassau and Freeport both have container freight station capacity, so deconsolidation is not the constraint it is on smaller islands, and the regional breakeven applies, with the capped processing fee favouring the container.

  • Under 12 to 15 CBM: consolidated shipping wins.
  • 15 to 20 CBM: price both ways.
  • Above 20 CBM: a full container wins, and the capped fee favours it further.

Interworld Freight runs the consolidated option as a single service from origin CFS in China through Bahamian clearance: LCL shipping from China to the Bahamas. For full containers see container shipping to the Bahamas, and for ocean freight generally, ocean freight to the Bahamas. Where the cargo needs delivering to the consignee rather than the port, door-to-door service to the Bahamas covers the inland leg. The mode analysis is in LCL vs FCL for Caribbean imports.

Ports of entry in the Bahamas

Nassau, through the Arawak Cay container port on New Providence, is the principal gateway and serves the largest concentration of population and commerce.

Freeport on Grand Bahama is a major container facility and a transshipment hub in its own right, with the Freeport free trade zone alongside it. For cargo destined for Grand Bahama or for staging, it is the better entry point.

West End on Grand Bahama handles smaller volumes.

The Bahamas is an archipelago, and inter-island distribution from either main port is a separate cost and time element that importers serving the Family Islands need to plan explicitly rather than assume.

Customs clearance in the Bahamas

Imports are administered by the Bahamas Customs and Excise Department, through the electronic Click2Clear system.

  • The importer needs a TIN, the taxpayer identification number.
  • Entry is filed on a C13 Home Consumption Entry for goods entering the domestic market.
  • Duty is assessed by HS code under the Bahamian tariff schedule, not the CARICOM Common External Tariff.
  • VAT at 10% is charged on customs value plus duty.
  • The 1% processing fee applies, with a USD 10 minimum and a USD 750 maximum.
  • Environmental levies apply to specific categories.

Why the Bahamas is outside the CARICOM tariff

The Bahamas is a member of CARICOM but does not participate in the Common External Tariff or the single market customs regime. It sets its own rates, and because it has no income tax, import duty carries a revenue burden that in other CARICOM states is shared with a higher VAT.

The practical consequence for an importer is that regional rules of thumb do not transfer. A duty rate that applies in Jamaica or Barbados under the CET tells you nothing about the Bahamian rate for the same HS code. Look it up specifically. Interworld Freight maintains dedicated references at Bahamas customs duty rates and Bahamas customs clearance, and the regional comparison is in Caribbean import duties and taxes.

What importers actually bring in from China

The Bahamian import mix from China is shaped by two economies sitting on top of each other: a resident population and a very large tourism and hospitality sector. That produces demand for hospitality furniture, fixtures and equipment, construction and finishing materials, consumer electronics and small appliances, textiles, and packaged goods and packaging.

Hospitality FF&E is the category worth flagging, because it combines high volume, seasonal deadlines tied to renovation windows, and low tolerance for damage. It is the clearest case in the Bahamian trade for a full container over consolidated shipping, whatever the CBM arithmetic says, since consolidated cargo is handled at two container freight stations and travels alongside unknown freight.

Where these shipments fail

  • Applying CARICOM tariff assumptions. The Bahamas uses its own schedule. A CET rate for your HS code is not the Bahamian rate.
  • Forgetting the environmental levies. They apply to specific categories and are not part of the duty or VAT calculation.
  • Ignoring inter-island distribution. Landing at Nassau is not landing at Abaco or Exuma, and the onward leg is a separate cost and schedule.
  • Splitting orders unnecessarily. Flat charges plus the capped processing fee mean two small shipments cost more than one combined shipment of the same total.
  • Booking at the LCL cutoff rather than before it. A missed sailing carries the cargo past its Miami connection as well.
  • Comparing ocean rates rather than landed cost. On a small consignment the flat charges can exceed the freight.

Interworld Freight is a global freight forwarder headquartered in Miami, running transpacific consolidation from China alongside its transatlantic, Middle East and Oceania trades, with the Bahamas served both direct from Asia and through the Florida gateway. The wider lane is covered in shipping from China to the Caribbean, and the United States trade lane, which follows different rules, in shipping to the Bahamas.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does shipping from China to the Bahamas take?

Our consolidated service quotes 19 to 39 days from the Chinese port to the Bahamian ports on file: Shanghai 19 days to Freeport, Qingdao and Shenzhen 36, Ningbo 38. That is the China port to Miami leg (18, 35, 35 and 37 days) plus 1 to 2 days from Miami. Nassau is quoted per sailing. Air freight into Lynden Pindling takes 3 to 7 days.

What taxes do I pay importing into the Bahamas from China?

Import duty by HS code under the Bahamian tariff schedule, VAT at 10% on customs value plus duty, and a customs processing fee of 1% with a USD 10 minimum and a USD 750 maximum. Environmental levies apply to specific categories such as vehicles, tyres and batteries. The Bahamas has no income tax, so duty rates carry more of the revenue burden than in other CARICOM states.

Is the Bahamas part of the CARICOM Common External Tariff?

No. The Bahamas is a CARICOM member but does not participate in the Common External Tariff or the single market customs regime, and it applies its own tariff schedule. Duty rates that apply in Jamaica or Barbados under the CET tell you nothing about the Bahamian rate for the same HS code, so look yours up specifically.

What is a C13 entry?

The C13 Home Consumption Entry is the customs entry document used for goods entering the Bahamian domestic market, filed through the Bahamas Customs and Excise Department's Click2Clear system. The importer needs a taxpayer identification number before it can be filed.

Which Bahamian port should my cargo arrive at?

Nassau, through the Arawak Cay container port on New Providence, for the main population and commercial centre. Freeport on Grand Bahama for cargo destined for that island or for staging, since it is a significant transshipment facility with a free trade zone alongside. If your consignee is on a Family Island, plan the inter-island leg explicitly, because it is a separate cost and schedule.

Why does the processing fee matter for small shipments?

Because it is capped. At 1% with a USD 750 maximum, the fee stops scaling at USD 75,000 of value. A USD 20,000 consignment pays the full 1%, while a USD 200,000 container pays 0.375%. Combined with the flat terminal handling and documentation charges, this is one more reason that fewer, larger shipments cost less per unit than several small ones.
