The honest answer to what a 20 foot container to Jamaica costs is that the ocean freight is rarely the largest number on the final bill. Understanding the whole structure gives you a working budget, and it tells you which levers actually move the total.

The cost stack, in order

Origin. Pickup or delivery to the port, export documentation, terminal handling at the load port. If you are consolidating in Miami, add warehouse handling. If you are loading at your own facility, add the drayage of an empty box to you and a loaded one back.

Ocean freight. Charged per container, sensitive to season and to whether the service is direct or transships. Miami and Port Everglades both run frequent services to Kingston, which is one reason Florida is the natural gateway for this lane.

Destination. Terminal handling at Kingston, the shipping line's release and documentation fees, port charges, and the customs process. Then delivery from the port to the final address.

Jamaican import charges. These are assessed by Jamaica Customs on the value of the goods and are separate from the freight entirely: import duty according to the tariff classification, general consumption tax, standard compliance fee, environmental levy where applicable, and processing fees. For most commercial cargo these charges exceed the ocean freight.

What changes the number most

Factor Effect
20ft versus 40ft A 40ft box rarely costs double a 20ft, so cost per cubic metre falls sharply with size
Direct versus transshipment Direct sailings save days and usually handling
Season Pre-Christmas and back-to-school peaks tighten space out of Florida
Full versus part load Below roughly half a container, LCL is usually cheaper
Personal effects versus commercial Different documentation, different customs treatment

The 20ft versus 40ft decision

A 20 foot container holds around 28 to 30 cubic metres of usable space and a 40 foot around 56 to 58. Because the price gap between the two is far smaller than the volume gap, shippers who are close to filling a 20 foot box often pay less per unit by moving up. The exception is dense cargo: weight limits bite before volume does, and a 20 foot container can reach its payload ceiling while looking half empty. We cover those ceilings in container weight limits.

When LCL beats a container

If your shipment is under roughly half a 20 foot container, consolidation almost always wins. You pay for the space you use, you join a weekly sailing instead of waiting for volume, and Kingston has regular consolidated services from Florida. The trade is two extra handling points and a few extra days. LCL container shipping explains how that works in practice.

Getting a quote that survives arrival

Ask for the ocean freight, the origin charges, the destination charges and the delivery separately. Ask whether the quote includes the release at Kingston. Ask how many free days the container has at destination before demurrage starts, because on this lane clearance delays are the usual cause of unexpected cost. And separate freight from duty in your budget: your forwarder quotes the first, Jamaica Customs assesses the second.

Our container shipping to Jamaica service covers both FCL and consolidated cargo, and if your goods originate in Asia rather than the United States, shipping from China to Jamaica covers that routing instead.

FAQ

How long does a container take from Florida to Jamaica?

Short ocean transits of a few days on direct services, plus port and clearance time at both ends. Consolidated cargo adds warehouse handling days on each side.

Do I pay duty on personal effects going to Jamaica?

Personal effects are assessed under their own rules and are not automatically exempt. Returning residents may qualify for concessions subject to conditions set by Jamaica Customs.

Which is cheaper, 20ft or 40ft?

A 40ft container costs more in absolute terms and less per cubic metre. If you can fill it, it is the better value; if you cannot, you are paying for air.

Which Jamaican port should I use?

Kingston handles the majority of containerised traffic and is the region's main transshipment hub. Montego Bay serves the western side of the island.

Can I ship a car in the same container?

Vehicles have their own documentation and customs treatment and cannot simply be loaded with household goods without declaring them properly.
