Miami is the natural staging point for cargo moving between the United States, the Caribbean and Latin America, which is why third party logistics space here is priced and operated differently from a generic distribution market. If you are comparing quotes, the headline rate per pallet tells you almost nothing. The structure underneath it tells you everything.

How a 3PL quote is built

Warehouse pricing separates into three buckets, and providers weight them differently depending on what they want your account to look like.

Bucket What it covers Typical unit
Storage Space held over time Per pallet, per square foot, per month
Handling Receiving, put-away, picking, packing, loading Per pallet, per carton, per order line
Value added Labelling, kitting, palletising, photos, returns Per unit or per hour

A low storage rate paired with aggressive handling charges suits slow-moving inventory poorly and fast-turning inventory even worse. Before comparing two proposals, model your own volumes: pallets in, pallets out, order lines per month, and how long an average pallet sits. The provider that wins on paper often loses once the real turn rate is applied.

What is specific to Miami

Three things change the calculation here.

Export consolidation. A large share of Miami warehousing exists to build consolidated ocean containers for the Caribbean and Latin America. If your cargo is destined for those markets, a warehouse that already runs weekly consolidations feeds you into an existing schedule instead of waiting for volume. That is the difference between a container leaving this Friday and one leaving when it fills.

Customs status. Bonded space and foreign trade zone status let goods sit without duty being paid until they enter US commerce, or leave again without ever entering. For re-export flows this is not a nicety, it is the entire business case. Ask whether the space is genuinely bonded and who holds the bond.

Gateway distance. PortMiami, Port Everglades and Miami International Airport each pull different traffic. Drayage cost and cut-off times depend on which one your cargo actually uses, and the difference between a Medley facility and one further north shows up on every move.

Our Miami warehousing operation sits inside that gateway, and the 3PL service page sets out how the space is used.

The questions that reveal the operation

  • What is your receiving turnaround, measured from truck arrival to inventory visible in the system?
  • How do you handle a short shipment or damaged carton at receiving, and who is notified?
  • What is the cut-off time for same-day order release?
  • Which WMS runs the site, and what does my portal actually show?
  • Is cycle counting continuous or annual, and what does the shrink history look like?
  • Who signs for cargo after hours?

Vague answers here predict every problem you will have later. Operational detail is cheap to ask for and expensive to discover.

When 3PL beats your own space

Renting a unit and hiring two people looks cheaper in a spreadsheet until you price the peaks. A 3PL converts a fixed cost into a variable one, absorbs seasonality, and carries the racking, the forklift fleet, the labour management and the insurance. The trade is control. If your process needs constant supervision, or your product needs handling that a shared floor cannot give it, the outsourced model fights you.

The middle path most exporters land on is a 3PL for consolidation and staging near the gateway, with their own space closer to production or retail. Cargo then moves to Miami as full loads, gets consolidated, and ships. Our gateway logistics and ocean freight services are built around that flow.

FAQ

What is a 3PL warehouse?

A third party logistics warehouse stores and handles your inventory under contract, charging for space and for the work performed on the goods instead of leasing you the building.

How much does warehouse space cost in Miami?

It varies by submarket, ceiling height, dock ratio and whether the space is bonded. Rather than compare headline rates, compare total cost against your real pallet turn and order profile, because handling usually outweighs storage for active inventory.

What is the difference between bonded and standard warehousing?

In a bonded facility duty is deferred while goods remain under customs control, which suits re-export and staged entries. Standard space holds goods that have already cleared.

Do I need a 3PL if I only ship a few pallets a month?

Often yes. Small volumes are exactly where fixed costs hurt, and where joining an existing consolidation schedule gets you a sailing you could not fill alone.

Can a 3PL handle my customs paperwork?

The warehouse handles cargo. Entry filing is done by a licensed customs broker. A forwarder coordinates both so the documents and the physical cargo stay in step.
