These costs will be communicated to the customer once we have this updated from carrier. (Interworld Freight is not responsible for extra costs generated during pickups.)

  3. NMFTA Standards: Rates from trucking companies are based on an evaluation of six transportation characteristics: dimensions, weight, density, handling, stowability, and liability, as defined by NMFTA (http://www.nmfta.org/). As a result, additional charges such as dry runs, re-delivery, storage, and additional chassis rental may be assessed and will be the responsibility of the shipper. While Interworld Freight will attempt to avoid or mitigate these additional charges, these circumstances are beyond our control, and we cannot absorb these charges.

Chassis Rental: This is a special trailer or undercarriage used for transporting maritime containers by road. It is a structure that hooks onto trucks, enabling containers to be placed on top for road transportation. Consequently, trucking companies charge a fee for the use of this structure, which is assessed daily or per use. Some locations may have minimum usage days.

Chassis Split: This charge applies when an empty container ready for pickup from a depot is not located at the same place as the chassis needed. In these cases, trucking companies charge an extra fee to cover the cost of traveling to two different locations—point A to collect the chassis and point B for the empty container. This cost can be incurred twice if, after delivering the loaded container to a rail or port, the driver must return the chassis to a different location.

Detention: A charge assessed when the loading/unloading process exceeds the free time provided by drivers, typically 1 to 2 hours. Beyond this time, drivers begin to charge detention or waiting time fees for each additional hour.

Drop/Hook: A fee applied when a container needs to be left at a loading/unloading site for several days or overnight. Once the container is ready, the driver retrieves it to either return the loaded container to the port or the empty container to the depot. Also known as DROP & PICK, this cost is generally twice the initial drayage fee.

Dry Run: An extra cost incurred when a driver picks up a container, but the move is canceled or the container cannot be loaded. This fee covers the driver's round-trip to the port/rail and back.

Fuel Surcharge: An additional fee to cover fluctuating fuel costs. Trucking companies add this percentage to inland tariffs, with each company setting its own rate for different routes or states.

HAZMAT Fee: A surcharge applied when containers are loaded with hazardous materials.

Layover Fee: An additional fee charged by carriers when their drivers drive for a determined time or distance without stopping. Each state has regulations on when this fee applies.

Light/Heavy Scale: A ticket required from carriers detailing the weight of the loaded container, chassis, cab, etc. This service can be privately requested from carriers, who will then weigh the containers to calculate the load's weight within them.

Live Load: Loadings that take between 1 to 2 hours.

Overweight: A surcharge applied when a 20/40 container exceeds the legal weight limit.

Pier Pass: A fee charged by terminals in Los Angeles and Long Beach to contribute to cleaning and decongesting these heavily trafficked and polluted ports.

Power Only: The use of just the truck cab, without the chassis.

Pre-Pull: A charge incurred when a container must be picked up a day before the scheduled loading/unloading date. This is common in heavily congested ports requiring morning operations or early morning appointments.

Rail Billing: A procedure conducted with the shipping line for container movements by rail. An email is sent to the shipping line's rail department detailing the number of pieces, weight, container number, and seal number. This process must be completed before the container can enter the rail system.

Re-Delivery: An extra cost incurred when a loaded/unloaded container cannot be returned to the port/depot for any reason. Drivers take the container to a yard, and once the situation is resolved, this cost applies when the container is taken back to the port/depot.

Reefer Surcharge: An extra fee for refrigerated containers.

Residential Fee: An additional charge applied for container loading in residential areas.

Stop Off: Also known as the 2nd Stop charge, this surcharge occurs when drivers have to visit two different locations to load. It also applies when drivers must make an additional trip outside the contracted route.

Tolls: The cost of tolls.

Tri-Axle: A set of extra tires on 20/40 chassis, commonly used when the weight exceeds the legal limit for highway travel.

Yard Storage: This fee is applied when a container needs to stay overnight, either loaded or awaiting loading, in a yard (parking facility).
